This website was created by epidemiology staff of the Southwest District Office of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Polk County Health Center, Taney County Health Department, and Joplin Health Department to serve (at least) all 18 counties and 20 health departments in Southwest Missouri. The intent was to develop a common tool for disease investigation staff to track disease in the community through various database tools. These database tools can include, but are not limited to, weekly syndromic surveillance, enhanced (daily) syndromic surveillance, pharmacy OTC sales, etc.

County health nurses, school nurses, daycare administrators, large employers, etc. input absentee data into the syndromic database. Local communicable disease nurses, epidemiology staff, etc. can export the data for analysis to detect trends in sick people to trigger additional investigations.
Upon notification of a dead bird, local public health staff can submit the report and this database displays a map showing clusters of reports. A cluster may prompt local environmental and disease staff to test birds in the area for disease (specifically west nile virus or avian influenza).
Local health department environmental staff conduct drinking water tests to check for bacteria. This database can be used to geographically display the results of those tests to assist in identifying a source of contamination.
EMResource provides real-time communication and resource management for everyone involved in emergency medical response. Authorized users log on to a secure web site and view regional emergency department status and available hospital resources to support patient transport and transfer decision-making.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is in the process of implementing a product created by the Johns Hopkins University - Applied Physics Laboratory. It is password protected and maintained by DHSS. Hospital emergency department registration personnel enter a chief complaint narrative which is processed by ESSENCE and categorized. This powerful software analyzes the data to create alerts and maps of increases in ER visit categories.
